According Psychologist Carol Dweck, people can be categorised into two mindsets – those with a growth mindset and those with a fixed mindset. Those with a growth mind-set are the ones who progress exponentially in their professional and personal lives. They have the right attitude to confront and overcome setbacks, rather than giving in to a challenge and claiming, ‘maybe, this isn’t for me.’

Obesity is a condition where we need to build on this growth mindset. As an individual who has had her own share with struggling with eating disorders, I understand how managing your weight and over all health can be difficult and frustrating. But I have also learned that making a real change takes an integrated view of one’s life. Hence, beating obesity takes much more than ‘eating less’ and ‘exercising more,’ rather it requires a holistic approach that builds this growth mindset.

In my recently published book, ‘I Can Beat Obesity! Finding the Motivation, Confidence and Skills to Lose Weight and Avoid Relapse,’ this is the approach I kept in mind. Indeed, readers are encouraged to beat obesity from a variety of angles – physical, emotional, social, and cognitive. Most importantly, this book sets a forward-looking tone so that you can develop the habit of setting goals, achieving them, and moving on to more challenging yet fulfilling goals.

I want to emphasise that much of the necessary change is within your scope of influence. Losing weight and becoming healthier are objectives you can actively work towards. Beating obesity is about finding the inner drive, strength, and persistence to improve your health and overall well-being; it isn’t about how you look on the outside.

To beat obesity, you will need to right tools, all of which are provided within ‘I Can Beat Obesity!’:

Information – Evidence about obesity as a condition is provided, including the proper definition of the condition, the types of fats in the body and methods to self-diagnose. Knowledge is key to correcting misconceptions about what constitutes a healthy weight and raising the issue of obesity with either yourself or someone you know.

A clear plan –This includes building an understanding of where you are in terms of readiness and confidence to propel you towards action.

Manageable goals – Several chapters are dedicated to breaking down the steps to beating obesity. Specifically, emotional, cognitive, behavioural, social, dietary, and physical well-being are individually discussed.

Motivation and confidence – Your mind will be your best friend in keeping you going. Without a burning desire, focus, and commitment to stay on your health journey, goals can become meaningless. This book provides chapters on how to take the future in your hands and learn to accept yourself so that you can better manage your choices and behaviours beyond obesity.

This book provides information and guidance for all of the tools mentioned above. Additionally, at the end of each chapter, you will find a series of reflective questions and exercises designed to help you take the first few steps and keep on moving forward.

I believe that building a habit of introspection is essential to changing your outlook, choices, and behaviour in life. Some of the questions you can ponder and answer with the help of this book include:

  • Have I acknowledged my weight problem?

  • Have I acknowledged the possible need to change?

  • Do I aim to achieve holistic well-being – physical, emotional, cognitive and social?

  • Am I ready to take this on?

  • Am I confident I can do this?

  • Am I able to put together a plan and set up milestones to get me started?

  • Am I prepared to prevent, or recover from, a potential relapse?

Beating obesity starts with asking one question, but it can quickly progress into a journey of self-discovery, acceptance and self-management if you act upon it. Going on this journey takes time and conscious effort, and this book will be there to support you every step of the way – from determining your ideal weight and health status, and maintaining these on a long-term basis. You will find that this book (and ultimately me) is a constant companion in your journey towards a healthier and happier life.

Picking up this book signals that you are already in a contemplation stage. Once you open this book, you will find advice on what to do and where to go next. Essentially, this book is not just about changing the number you see when you step on a weighing scale. It is about movement from where you are now to where you truly want to be – a healthier, happier and more content version of yourself.

If you read the book and it raises any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a message. Equally, if you are a professional seeking input or advice into weight management interventions or written content on the topic, please do email me at dr.davies@trustedwriter.com.
